From Folk to Fantasy

Veronica Henderson and I are delighted to be performing a programme of music by composers of either East European origin or with links to Eastern Europe. Hungary is represented by Franz Liszt, Mátyás Seiber, and Béla Bartók, and The Czech Republic by Leoš Janáček and Geraldine Mucha, who, though of Scottish/English birth, married Jiři Mucha (the painter Alphonse Mucha’s son) and spent most of her life in Prague. However, how did Scottish composer, Erik Chisholm, escape from our previous all Scottish programmes and find himself in an East European programme? He was a huge enthusiast and authority on the music of Janáček and in 1963, two years before he died, Pergamon Press commissioned him to write a book about Janáček’s opera. Also, his collection of songs based on Scottish traditional melodies, the Celtic Songbook, was published not in his native Scotland, but by the Ministry of Culture in the USSR.

Our recital on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig (Municipal Museum of Brunswick) is part of the festivities marking the 150th birth anniversary of the Braunschweig photographer Käthe Buchler. The performance will take place on the piano Clara Schumann bought from the Braunschweig based piano company, Grotrian-Steinweg in 1879.

A Musical Tale of Two Cities

A few years ago, a ‘lost’ work for cello and piano by Scottish composer, Neil MacKay, surfaced amongst my music scores. After including this piece in a few concerts, it inspired me, together with cellist Veronica Henderson, to delve deeper into Scotland’s musical heritage. Given that we were both born and raised in Scotland, this seemed an obvious project for us to embark on and has already introduced us to a considerable collection of works which are seldom or have never been performed and often are still unpublished.
